'History Among the Graves' Public Talks

Next ‘History Among the Graves’ talks:

Sunday 5 May 2024
10.00-10.45 am
Rescuing the King Angel

Our ‘History Among the Graves’ free public talks are held outdoors in the cemetery and are a great way to learn some interesting history in a beautiful setting under the trees. We aim to run a programme of varied talks with different speakers each year. The schedule will appear below.

The talks run for 45 minutes, followed by a Q & A session, and take place near the office in the centre of the cemetery. Find some space out in the open air, make yourself comfortable on a chair or blanket with a drink and nibbles, and sit back and enjoy the morning. History books, cemetery information and free tea and coffee will also be available from our stalls.

NEXT TALKS FOR 2024

Sunday 5 May 2024
10.00-10.45 am
Rescuing the King Angel
Presented by Tracey Olivieri

The angel statue on the King family grave is one of the icons of the historical South Brisbane Cemetery. This inspirational free public talk in the cemetery will tell the tale of how the statue was sadly toppled by tree growth and smashed to pieces a few years ago, and how the tireless work of a community group rescued it.

This talk will be delivered outdoors in the cemetery by FOSBC president Tracey Olivieri.

‘Rescuing the King Angel’ is part of the ‘Angels and Ancestors: South Brisbane Cemetery’ event at the cemetery (in Dutton Park) on Sunday 5 May as the Friends of South Brisbane Cemetery mark the 154th anniversary of the opening of this beautiful heritage-listed heritage place.
