GUARDIAN ANGELS

Guardian Angels

Our monthly ‘Guardian Angels’ day is a community event where we clean headstones, grave tops and pathways in the cemetery.

This is a friendly community activity and all are welcome. Guardian Angels look after the cemetery, and there are lots of jobs to do, including washing and tidying graves and paths, gardening, and clearing tree debris. We can find something that suits you!

'Guardian Angels' at the cemetery, November 2019.

We will be at the cemetery between 9 am – 4 pm on these days. You are welcome to come when you want and stay for as long as you want. Meet at the office in the centre of the cemetery. Parking is available inside the cemetery. Please email us if you have any queries.

We can provide equipment and advice if needed. Please see here for info on the required equipment.

Our monthly ‘Guardian Angels’ programme commenced in 2018*, and it has been wonderful to witness so many different people, young and old, come together to discover the satisfying experience of washing off a headstone or clearing the top of a grave to reveal something of its former glory to the world. This is one of the ways in which we work to ensure that the ‘cemetery residents’ are not forgotten.

These days have become one of our most popular community activities, with many people returning again and again. We are gradually working through the cemetery section by section, cleaning and tidying every grave, large and small, to help extend the lifespan of these special spaces.

* Volunteers have cleaned graves and pathways at the South Brisbane Cemetery at various times since 2005, when three women started the group. We also did several ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ events and two huge community efforts in the wake of the January 2011 floods.

The volunteers need a lot of equipment and ongoing supplies to look after this special place. This costs us a lot of money. Your kind support will help us continue this work.
