Different Types of Cemetery Crosses

In the Christian religions, the cross symbolises faith and resurrection and is considered the perfect symbol of Christ’s sacrifice. It is of course based on apparatus of crucifixion. There are many variations on the cross symbol around the world, and pictured here are some of the different cemetery crosses that can be found in the South Brisbane Cemetery.

Calvary
The steps represent the hill of Calvary, the place where Christ was crucified.
Cemetery Crosses
Celtic/Ionic 
From the Celtic cultures of the British Isles. The circle symbolises eternity. 
Fleuree
From the French, the three ‘petals’ on each arm symbolise the Holy Trinity.
Cemetery Crosses
Greek
Has four arms equal in length. This symbol predates Christianity and was used by pagans. 
Latin
The simplest and most commonly used form of cemetery crosses.
Cemetery Crosses
Orthodox/Eastern 
Has the inscription board and footrests seen on Roman crucifixion apparatus. 
Pattée
Sometimes associated with Crusader knights, and later the 1871-1918 German Empire.
