'History Among the Graves': Free Public Talks

Join the leading cemetery historians Tracey Olivieri and Chris Dawson for 'History Among the Graves’, a series of free outdoor public talks in the cemetery.

Next talk: 'South Brisbane Cemetery Through 150 Years’

Where: Near the cemetery office.
When: Sunday 16 August, 10.30 - 11.30 pm

With the use of visual guides, Tracey and Chris will take you on a chronological journey through the history of this amazing place. They will describe its early years as a Victorian-era necropolis in the proud new City of South Brisbane; then the impact of floods, the war years, and 20th-century trends such as cremation; and then the cemetery's eventual decline and surprising rebirth as a heritage treasure.

The talk will take place outside, on the grass and under the trees. Tea and coffee will be available, and we strongly encourage attendees to bring along a picnic and a chair or blanket so you can sit back and enjoy the talk in this beautiful setting.

Expected duration of the talk will be 45 minutes, followed by a Q and A session. This is part of our ‘Here to Help’ Day, when FOSBC volunteers will be available through the day to assist you with queries and finding graves.

Public safety precautions, including social distancing, will be taken. Parking and toilet facilities will be available.
