'Hangman's Walk' Night Tours - South Brisbane Cemetery

Friday 8 December 2017, 7.30 pm, South Brisbane Cemetery

On this special night tour you will visit the grave sites of various people associated with the history of hanging in Queensland. This will include the hangman and all the people he hanged, as well the judges, gaolers, under-sheriff and doctors who all had a hand in the executions.

You will hear the fascinating backstory to hangings - how they were carried out, how they changed over time, and why Queensland became the first part of the British Empire to stop them.

Please note this tour contains confronting material and is not suitable for children under 14 years of age.

This is also a 'real history' tour of the cemetery and will not mention anything about 'ghosts'.

'Hangman's Walk' will be led by Christopher Dawson, who is one of Queensland's leading capital punishment historians. He is the author of several publications and journal articles on hanging, has presented public talks on the subject, and was the history consultant for the executed prisoners' plaque in the cemetery. He is also happy to take your questions during the tour.

This tour will be presented occasionally during the year, or if you can prepay for a minimum of 15 people, we will take your group on a 'private tour' on the second Friday of select months.

Tours commence at 7.30 pm and are approximately two hours long.

Cost is $15 pp, or $10 concession. Family and group discounts are available. The tours are not-for-profit.

This tour contains graphic information and is suitable for ages 14+.
